Dukat, Kalasë, and Vergo: Southern Albania Ravaged by Wildfires

In the summer of 2025, southern Albania faced one of its most severe wildfire seasons in recent memory, with the regions of Dukat, Kalasë, and Vergo among the hardest hit. The fires rapidly spread across forests and agricultural land, threatening villages and forcing emergency evacuations. Smoke and flames created hazardous conditions, endangering both residents and local wildlife, while local authorities worked tirelessly to contain the blazes.

Emergency response teams, supported by helicopters and specialized equipment from neighboring countries, battled the fires around the clock. Despite these efforts, the fires caused significant environmental and economic damage, destroying homes, farmland, and critical infrastructure. The blazes also severely impacted air quality, sending thick smoke across towns and increasing health risks for vulnerable populations.

The combined efforts of local firefighters, volunteers, and international assistance were crucial in preventing the flames from spreading further. This tragic event highlights the urgent need for improved wildfire monitoring, faster detection systems, and coordinated prevention strategies to protect both people and ecosystems in Albania.
